Many students are receiving their OPT approvals late and noticing their OPT is less than 12 months.
Let me clarify what’s happening
OPT is required to be completed within 14 months of your program end date. This means the later your OPT is approved, the less time you may have to actually use it.
So if you receive an OPT approval that is shorter than 12 months, it is usually not an error by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services it’s a result of this rule.
The key takeaway:
Apply as early as possible. Waiting too long or delays in processing can directly reduce your OPT time.
I’ve seen students receive full 12 months even after delays, and others receive only 6–8 months.
The difference is simple:
How much time is left within that 14-month window at the time of approval.
Example:
If your program end date = May 1, 2026
Your 14-month OPT deadline = July 1, 2027
Approved: September 2026
OPT: September 2026 → September 2027 ❌ not allowed
So USCIS adjusts to:
End date: July 1, 2027
You still get ~10 months
If you’re planning for OPT, timing matters more than you think.
